I really, really relate to a newsletter I received from David Romanelli lately, where he talks about his grandma who passed away a year ago. I also have an immense love for my grandma; she practically raised me and is 90 years now. I just talked to her on the phone since we are separated by the Atlantic Ocean. We talk about the same subjects pretty much every time but my time spent with her is always a mind opening experience. She expresses a lot of sentimental memories that although sometimes are depressing, make me think of the essential things in life, which are to be healthy and happy, quoting her.

As I discover myself hustling after a career as singer/songwriter and multimedia artist, spending countless hours in front of a computer, ruining my back, eyes and fitness, I repeat her words in my head. Most important is that you are healthy, a sentence every phone call starts with before she is reliving her painful stories of WWII, moving in every aspect for me ‘cause I have kind of taken them on emotionally since I heard them over and over since I was a child.

When she was a young mother of 3 she was deported from Bohemia located on the German and Czech border, loosing everything, house, home, her husband and her husband’s brother in a concentration camp. He was part of the social party and – against Hitler.

She worked 3 shifts to pay off the house; they had built it with their own hands, the Czech dispropriated it and got rid of the Bohemian population. Raising the children by herself and lots of hardship was to follow since my grandpa fell into a long coma and it left her running a little farm by herself while she lived through this time of incomprehensible injustice done to mankind.

She tells me about her life and I wonder how she managed to be as strong a woman and as inspirational for everyone as she is, radiating this incredible deep and wise aura. As her most delightful moments she considers working in the garden, eating whole bars of chocolate or boxes of pralines at once and having her children and grandchildren around. Really simple pleasures, that some take for granted, but living in peace, enjoying live and the very moment in good health is special.

My most beautiful moment was recently as I discovered a picture of her in the garden with our dogs. It brings me right back to that beauty and familiarity, that warm feeling when you know you are loved. I think that sums it up, nothing is more delicious than binging or munching on love. It’s a wisdom that many commercials use…

I feel blessed to share this with you all, because nowadays sentimentality, honesty and pure emotion often stay under cover.

QUOTE about the artist P*I*A

“I consider Pia Zierhut to be an outstanding artist leading her generation in the field of experimental contemporary art and cross-over performance. ”
Ottmar Hoerl, Director – Academy of Visual Arts, Nuernberg

“I was in need of a vocalist for a recording project and her voice and creative contribution was outstanding. We have collaborated on this and other projects…”
Constant, Recording artist’s album released by Island Records – Quote

“We chose Pia Zierhut to be the first ever artist of non hungarian nationality to participate in our big travelling exhibition from 2004 to 2010. The works were shown in Siklos, Budapest, Belgrade, Moscow, Prague and Vienna will be shown in all of Europe…”
Interview Siklósi Szalon – Siklos Global Travellor, Siklósi Szalon

“She was the only student in her class to experiment with many different types of media, such as sculpture, performance, installations, engineering, songwriting and singing.”
Professor H.-P. Reuter, Academy Nuernberg, DE – Quote

“Pia is a rarely encountered talent who combines very complex and extremely work-intensive art works with brilliant multimedia performances. She designs this artistic stage and her own costumes, creates and records musical accompaniment, and improvises live sounds during her performances…
Patrick Loschert, Gallery T40, Germany – Pressrelease for Solo Exhibition

“I was very impressed by the intensity of her work and the unique combination of conceptual insight and personal transportation through different mediums. Pia combined digital video, a three-dimensional collage, and music to present a very personal, yet universal, experience.”
Ottmar Hoerl, visual artist, musician, cellist – Quote

“Spirituality is such a prototype that finds many bored exemples, but in Pia and her work it is revived. Not the technique, perfection in recording and mastering or knowing your instrument alone make a moving piece of music, but the ear, the spirit and the sound of an authentic individual.”
It ends with the Big Bang, the ethereal star dance on the canvas of the club Disharmony: You can tell that the choice-New-Yorker Pia Zierhut is, among other skilled artistic professions video artist. The ex-art student “on tour”…returned with her new show “Songs in 3D” back in her hometown. The 3D effects in the background… the restless wandering, glossy propagating tendrils, swirling stars and planets, swirling psychedelic colors, shapes and faces look so very fascinating – Timothy Leary would have been impressed.

… Flakes falling from the gray city sky, people hurrying past in the shadow of skyscrapers, it could be snow, but also the fallout from Ground Zero. “You!” is the song that was written in the wake of September 11, under, according to the artist, the “cloudy sky over New York.” … America can also be very sensitive, gentle and vulnerable, is one of the messages of P*I*A’s intimate songs. Husband Steven Ciric from Chicago accompanied her on the guitar and adds the delicate, soaring sounds of blues and folk rock elements.

The musical bite in the Big Apple tastes otherwise sweet, sometimes bitter, Zierhut’s American songs are urgent and profound, have naive charm and, despite all the experimentation would be most suitable also for coffee houses. It’s about universal love and human consciousness – acoustically and visually. P * I * A is her stage name with an asterisk, which stands for personality, identity, authenticity. After just over an hour, the presentation, before a cheering audience, ended, there are a few cover pieces, from jazz to “Over the Rainbow”: After the fresh experimental music one catches oneself in the realization of how dependent we actually become of such mainstream songs… Uwe Eichler

P*I*A lautet ihr Künstlername, mit Sternchen, was, für Persönlichkeit, Identität, Authentizität steht. (0 97 21) 2 88 95. Uwe Eichler

Editor Montag Stiftung Bildende Kunst, Bonn, in cooperation with Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg 112 pages, 110 ills. in color, with DVD Paperback, 24 x 18 cm E 24,00, sFr 43,00 ISBN 978-3-939738-91-6

Four symposia in two years: the series “Getting out of the Ivory Tower!” (2007/2008) provides an insight into the current discussion of conditions in further education at art academies and forms a platform for controversial discussions. In Nuremberg, Münster, Vienna and most recently in Leipzig, opportunities and perspectives of education for artists were discussed, and it came down again and again to the issue of how the neuralgic transition from art college to a freelance existence is structured and how the academies prepare their graduates for this. One volume is devoted to each symposium, summarizing the works of the contributors, along with extensive visual material. A DVD is included with each volume. This helps to make them indispensable handbooks for all those who are thinking of making a living through art.

In this first symposium of the ”Montag” Fine Arts Foundation series ”Getting out of the Ivory Tower!” different perspectives and strategies were discussed. Lectures, posts and the documentation of the workshop are now published in a book. On 112 pages it addresses theory and practice, from the opportunities and prospects of the art training to myths and mechanisms of the art business.
